Protein Diet Plan

When we think of a Protein Diet Plan, we normally think of athletes and body builders, people trying to build up their muscles.  However more and more non-athletic people are finding that a high protein diet is also a good way to lose weight, and still eat the foods they really enjoy, mainly meat.  By limiting the amount of carbohydrates, losing weight on a high protein diet is fairly painless.  Painless in the short term but perhaps not in the long term.

An article by Mayo Clinic Nutritionist K. Zeratsky,R.D.,L.D. states, “For most healthy people, a high-protein diet generally isn't harmful if followed for a short time, such as three to four months, and may help with weight loss. However, the risks of using a high-protein diet — usually with carbohydrate restriction — for the long term are still being studied. Several health problems may result if a high-protein diet is followed for an extended time.”

If Carbohydrate intake is cut back too much, nutritional deficiencies will develop and health problems occur.  Constipation, diverticulitis and even an increased risk of cancer.  Another thing to consider, if red meat and full-fat milk are consumed for extended periods, the risk of Heart Disease increases.  Problems with your liver and kidney’s may also develop if your body has trouble eliminating protein metabolism wastes.

Perhaps as a weight loss aid for a short time, a high protein diet isn’t bad, provided your choices of protein aren't just hamburgers.  Include chicken(skinless), lean beef, fish, pork and low-fat dairy products.  Make sure to eat vegetables for their fiber and also fruit, along with whole grain bread.  When you've reached your goal, cut back on the meats and increase the vegetables and fruits.  By eating non-processed fresh food and exercising, you’re weight will stay off without you even thinking about it.

Remember if you have kidney trouble, liver disease or diabetes, are taking medications, or pregnant, or breast feeding, ask your doctor what he thinks of high protein diets, I bet he’s not in favor of them.  Be careful!
